June Holiday Lineup

June 5: National Doughnut/Donut Day

No matter how you choose to spell it, these breakfast treats are delicious! And June 5 honors the Salvation Army “Lassies” who brought homemade foods, and often doughnuts, to boost the morale of American WWI troops. Sarasota Magazine recently named Der Dutchman Restaurant and Bakery (3713 Bahia Vista Street) as one of the best places to find this treat.

June 6: D-Day WWII

On this day in 1944, 156,000 American, British, and Canadian forces landed on the coast of France’s Normandy region in the largest amphibious military assault in history. Three months later, Western Europe was liberated from Nazi Germany’s control.

June 14: Flag Day

Flag Day is celebrated to commemorate the adoption our national flag. In 1777 the second Continental Congress adopted the flag of the United States: thirteen horizontal red and white alternating stripes and 50 white stars on a field of blue make up the current Old Glory.

June 17: Eat Your Vegetables Day

We could all probably use a reminder on the importance of eating a balanced diet. If you need an extra nudge to eat your veggies, plan a trip to your local farmer’s market for some great deals on local produce and some extra motivation.

The Sarasota Farmers Market has a 30-year tradition of hosting a gathering of farmers, businesses, and artisans, all in the heart of downtown. Located at 1420 State Street, and open Saturdays from 7:00 a.m. – 1:00 p.m., the market is a great place for residents and visitors to shop for local fare.

June 18: International Picnic Day

Who doesn’t love an old-fashioned picnic? Apparently everyone does, as this is an international holiday! Hopefully Mother Nature will provide some sunshine on June 18, so we can all enjoy a relaxing meal on a blanket at our favorite scenic spot. Don’t forget about the grill areas located throughout the property – the perfect place for impromptu outside dining.

June 21: First Day of Summer

It’s finally here! Time for poolside lounging, bar-be-cues, music festivals, fairs, camping, boating, and your favorite summer activities. Don’t forget to enjoy every minute of the hot weather – it’s only 93 days and 15.5 hours until fall!

June 21: Father’s Day

Today is the day to celebrate your father or a father-figure in your life. The one who played ball with you, taught you to fish, and was always there to give you advice in those tough times growing up. Whether he was your biological father or someone who filled that role, do something special today for this important person in your life.

Happy Father's Day
